United we stand, divided we fall

By Yeoh Li Ying

OK, let’s get serious and straight to the point.

Boy, I was so dead wrong. With all the happenings around campus I thought (really thought) that we are all united as one. What happened the other day, has yet again and again failed to convince me that we are all united as one. Forgive me if I am wrong but I have witnessed things that will not make us human race just yet. We are all still divided by our colours. Yes we are. Does Orang Minyak look oily?

By Aaron Rao

With all the rumors or news or myth or gossip spreading around over a potential serial rapist lurking around campus compounds, one must wonder how might a rapist look like? Some say that they look like a dirty and messy dude and dark skinned. Some said that they’re of other nationality working in the campus compound. Well I’ve got bad news for those reading or having a stereotypical mindset of how they think a rapist might look like. Continue reading ‘Does Orang Minyak look oily?’

Apatah lagi berfikir diluar kotak. Para pelajar hanya mengikut telunjuk guru–guru sahaja, mendengar ucapan Guru Besar selama berjam–jam sampai mengambil masa pembelajaran, melihat guru membaling buku dan cikgu yang tidak menunaikan kewajipan kerana sibuk menjual kain. Semua ini merugikan ramai pihak. Terutamanya negara. Yelah bila pelajar itu dah melihat dunia dan menyedari kelemahan ini dia tidak akan lagi mahu hidup di sini dan Malaysia akan kehilangan ramai golongan profesional. CCTV powerless against Orang Minyak

By Ng Eng Kiat

cctvposter.jpgUniversiti Sains Malaysia’s efforts in projecting itself as a clean and healthy garden campus have been recently blighted by hot rumours amongst students that that women have been raped in their dorms.

While such talk have not been new – apparently surfacing once every couple of years – paranoia and fear have gripped the female population (for real) this time because the alleged rapist is known to them. And because CCTVs cannot catch it.

It is purportedly the Orang Minyak, a mythical paranormal being in oily human-like body that needs to make greasy love to virgins. And CCTVs do not catch Orang Minyaks on tape because the Minyaks are supposedly able to walk float transport themselves through walls. Continue reading ‘CCTV powerless against Orang Minyak’

I wish I could fly

By Shamala Suresh Kee

I wish I could fly. I would, then, spend my time flying rather than walking all around campus. But, then it will be still strenuous, for my muscle would still ache and my mind would be spinning having to rush from one end to the other, hoping to be in time for class. Hey, talking about rushing about, Thaipusam had been a rushed celebration, for me at least! Joining the mass celebration last Wednesday back at Kg.Kepayang, Gopeng (it is in Perak, for those who has no inkling on where Gopeng is) and make a hasty comeback to USM. Even my sisters came down for a family gathering since federal states were declared to holiday, too (why all of a sudden, I wonder). But, those days, when my mother was alive, we would go to Tapah at Thaipusam mornings and then Kg. Kepayang in the afternoon before wrapping it up at Ipoh, following the procession of chariot with Lord Muruga at its threshold. Continue reading ‘I wish I could fly’

The oily man

By Syarifah Hadli

sumpahorangminyak.jpg After writing a piece that provoked much attention from various people, I have decided to write about more simple things in life. Well, most of my writings are based on that. Right? Now, how many of us have heard the orang minyak story? I don’t know about it until a good friend of mine, Yee Wen sent me a message yesterday that pretty much serve as a warning to us girls about the rape cases that have been lingering around campus for the past week, without anybody knowing the validity of the story itself.

I mean, orang minyak? I am not being arrogant, but I am skeptical. I mean, if there’s anyone to be blame for the so-called rape cases that is said happening around the campus, orang minyak shouldn’t be blame. Continue reading ‘The oily man’

Serabut

Kemenangan mungkin. Ialah nak pilihan raya bukan. Kadar jenayah juga semakin tinggi. Baru tadi aku dengar pasal orang minyak kat sini. Seram. Continue reading ‘Serabut’

For Malaysia, let’s dialogue

By Ng Eng Kiat

saya-anak-malaysia_mob.jpg For many Malaysians, it is hard imagining the young today coming together to critically unravel the various realities constructing their lives.

Coming together is hard when certain stereotypes, especially racial ones, have built walls of doubt around our hopes for change.

As sad as this sounds, there are those who construct meanings using empirical “facts”, which are derived and dependent on one supposed constant – race, and claim that rationalism has triumphed.

And as rational as some still think that formula is, efforts to integrate the people of this nation as one people continue to be in vain.

It is hence encouraging, though painful, that this little initiative by the name of Kasikampus aims to call upon fellow students to leave one bag of constructs behind, and walk out of campus a new person, “Kita Anak Bangsa Malaysia”. Continue reading ‘For Malaysia, let’s dialogue’

Do they even give a damn? Continue reading ‘Ignorance is bliss?’
