Perk Com?

By Aaron Rao

I’d like to say a few words regarding our dear own communications society PERKOM. From my own eyes, and probably the eyes of many, Perkom has not been doing what it is suppose to be doing. To bear the name of the school, I would like to see perkom actually doing things that has to do with communications and what we learn i.e. free movie previews, tickets to the Kancil Awards, or educational tours like to TV3 or Astro.

But guess what? What Perkom did this year, and every single year are probably a great waste of gathered resources that the committee themselves work their asses to mount up. Things are repeatedly being done year by year with new committees. Like selling T-shirts for instance, if you can’t come out with a really good design, then just don’t sell them. This is not just coming from me; almost all of the juniors I’ve spoken to hated the T-shirts. Last year’s painting of a horrible looking Malaysian Flag just to have it washed out in the rain after a single night is another example of how money is being wasted. That rag now is probably chucked somewhere collecting dust.

OK, probably those in Perkom exco will be saying I don’t know what problems they face. In all fairness to the excos, money is indeed a big big problem for Perkom to do anything that’s worth the student’s time to participate. Getting sponsors for a small varsity club is not an easy task. This is why this article is not directed to the committee, it’s more for those upstairs.
Please for crying out loud acknowledge that Perkom needs a big financial support from the school. You can’t expect a student walking into a big company with just an official sponsorship letter and leave with 1000 ringgit in their hands. If Perkom continues to come out with such ridiculous activities and ways to achieve profitability, might as well abolish the damn society.

When it comes to politics in Perkom, students please choose wisely. We have already learned countless times that racism is the most idiotic way to run anything that involves people affairs. Choose a leader based on strengths and charisma. Don’t just raise your hand and follow the crowd just because u belong in the same color. It happened last year, its pretty f(ish)ed up if it continues to happen. How often do we see a Chinese raise their hand to nominate a Malay or vice versa? Never, I suppose.

Perkom is now probably just a name for the committees to fill in to flower up their resumes. Who’s to blame? The choosers or the Chosen?

A new batch of Perkom committee has taken over, are we gonna see new fruitful agendas, or the same old crap? Let’s just wait and see…

I agree that PERKOM has never done a great job, their biggest event yearly would be the farewell dinner but even that falls off the mark most of the time. Since my time(class of 2005) and according to my seniors previously, PERKOM just exist for the sake of existing and carrying the school name. Talking about money, well I think no societies in USM are given financial assistance and usually when there is none you work hard at raising funds. The Indians Cultural Society in USM are one of the richest societies because they work hard at raising money for the society. I ran a club during my time too(ANSOS), we started with RM 7 as our balance and managed to get a substantial amount to run the club and have useful/meaningful activities and also have a substantial amount for the next term to carry on! So I think PERKOM and mass com students should not expect to be spoon-fed and work at making PERKOM meaningful. As for politics, well hopefully mass-comers realize and grow up, that’s all I can say!!

Heard that the new committee choosen this year was no different than our year. So it still remains the same. guess the politics in mass comm never ends if race is still a big issue that is not yet solved.

    the politic in mass comm..
    any evidence?
    that not bout politik la…
    cuba ingat balik?
during our year Agm..belum apa2 lagi..dah ramai yg angkat kaki blah dari meeting selepas YDP N NYDP dilantik ..
lepas tuh..sibok nak cakap pasal politik sedangkan xnak tunggu sampai meeting habis utk isi jawatan2 lain..
lg satu time meeting,,,bila kawan calonkan nama, dengan penuh terhormat turun kat bawah tolak..
    eee..what nonsense la…
after org yg dipilih secara rasminya mengisi jawatan2..wujud la perasaan2 x puas hati…
    lepas tu kutuk2,kutuk, n kutuk..
    enough is enough la…

by hook or by crook, let’s face it.
well, to be honest, i raised my hand during the AGM only because i was asked to do so, and guess what? i think it was the stupidest decision i’ve ever made. the choosing-based-on-color really should stop. we had some leader materials nominated but we closed our eyes thinking that the ones we were asked, yeah, ASKED, to vote for will eventually turn the leaf of perkom. sadly, it didnt work out that way. and to my dear friend “by hook”, you might see this as “nonsense” but it DOES make sense, because perkom is supposed to be carrying the school’s name, with activities we can be proud of, and can still talk about long after graduation. to be fair, yes it was a relevant thing that you painted the Jalur Gemilang for august 31st, but for everybody’s sake, could you please plan it carefully? the flag was hung, oh wait a minute, can you say it was hung when it was dangling on the grass? not to mention how it was wasted a few days later.
you don’t wanna admit that there’s some sort of politics going on in perkom, but face it, it IS politics all along. we had to vote, remember?
maybe you have a little heart feeling with the writer of this blog cause you never thought it would come out of HIM. but being friends, please dont take this personally. we are only voicing our thoughts because we expect the best out of perkom. i think instead of selling ugly (yes, UGLY) t-shirts and trying to talk us to go to the dinner, perkom better start to find a way to reduce the gap between the J, Broadcasting, and Persuasive majors. it is evident that students from one major rarely suppport the activity of another. and as you call the society PERSATUAN KOMUNIKASI, not persatuan kewartawanan, penyiaran or pemujukan, lets think of something to bring us closer.
my last word to the new batch of perkom, dont take these comments as some efforts to bring you down. these are FEEDBACKS, from the people who voted for you. i wish you guys all the best.

I myself am a 1st year student. Through what I can c and feel, these problems don’t only exist in perkom. It will be the same everywhere, even in societies that are in majority, a single race. Our countries elections have passed, and I had also hoped for my fellow comrades to understand how precious a vote is. Holistically the system needs quite an overhaul.

1.The fellow students(1st-years) that are to be elected (or would like a post) should show their charisma and capability even during the 1st semester. They have to show that they can lead. They have to embrace each and every fellow coursemate with respect and kindness. Then, most of the coursemates would recognize and understand this person better. This would definitely help them (those who don’t even know the person seating next to them in class!) to decide who to choose.

    2. If possible, as mentioned by ‘ultramangaia’, i agree that Perkom should at least try to organize an event that would bring students from all 3 major together. We do have a big crowd, and therefore even in the first year, we don’t even know those beside us in class (except for those who are famous in their own right)To have such a scale of event would definitely be helpful to Perkom itself. This is because of the irony that even some 3rd year senior do not know their other 3rd year seniors in another major.

3.Not many of those who vote for their friends understand their friends decisions. This is because there are people who just feel that their friends should be nominated , without asking their consent first. Although they are doing it out of a good motive, it is this matter that makes the chosen candidate to “bila kawan calonkan nama, dengan penuh terhormat turun kat bawah tolak..”. Of course-lah tolak, they don’t even want it in the 1st place! this is what happened this year too. Not to say that those who calonkan are heartless, they should however, try to understand their friends first.

    4. I have personally spoke to the YDP chosen for 08/09 term. I have promised him my support as I understood his hopes and plans to make Perkom a society that could bring ‘muhibbah’ . i wish him well, for I know it is a high task achieve.

well, perkom is another thing but what about us? jangan tunggu perkom buat program baru nak gather around and know each other. i think we our selves pun kena start making our effort. Why wait for others when we can do it ourselves? Jom semua .. lets meet up and know each other???

Yeap! I agree, although it is a big change and challenge for Perkom to do so. Anyway, I hope that each and everyone of us can start to meet and know more friends from the other majors! Work hard for the exams!!

pada pandangan saya perkom 07/08 lebih baik dari 06/07…aktiviti lebih banyak..bukan saya nak puji perkom..apa yang saya xpuas hati pun ada..ttg design baju yang xcantik lagsung…..eeeee…..tapi saya puji usaha perkom wat bendera malaysia..tapi time 2,saya xnampak pun penulis blog ni..setakat sembang jelah..setakat bleh kutuk jelah..pandai kutuk, tapi xpandai membantu..

    Pro perkom,

penulis blog ni mengkritik. X mengutuk. there’s a BIG difference between criticm and demeaning something. plus jangan cepat sangat nak cakap perkom 08 lagi bagus. masih awal lg. bla perkom 07 baru mula pun bnyk aktiviti dirancang, tapi apa pn X jadi in the end selain bendera & dinner.bukan hanya penulis blog ni, kira-kira 150 student komunikasi yang lain pun tak tolong buat bendera tu. Perkom buat bendera tu X buat announcement rasmi langsung untuk involve other students. dah habis buat baru suh orang p tgok. Tgok bendera tu terlantar kat rumput kene hujan. such an “achievement”…

tapi ada ahli perkom yang cerita, dalam perkom sendiri pun berpecah belah… ade puak lagi… puak yang satu ni xsokong xtvt puak satu lagi and vice versa. bukan ke kepimpinan melalui tauladan? if they can’t even work as a team, how can they expect us to team up with them? and from what i remember, we were given only a few minutes notice about the bendera thing. itu pun bagitau masa hujung kelas tutorial, time orang dah berpusu-pusu keluar. hmmm, perancangan yang bagus ke camtu? dan pro perkom, aktiviti perkom sidang ni memangla lebih banyak, tapi kualiti lebih penting daripada kuantiti.

to mr fire stone…i never heard your name in any GOVERNMENT activity as well..but don’t tell me NEVER in YOUR ENTIRE LIFE you gave a comment or judgement on the government accountability? I am sure all of us are mature enough to not argue over who are you to judge or where were you when the activity was on. PERKOM was set up for the communication students, so whether we are involved or not, we witnessed their effort and the activities they organized. we not participating simply do NOT mean that we do not support. it is just that we have our right to judge whether it is worth our support or not. what is the point of wasting money and paint just to make a gigantic flag? does it make us communication students closer to each other? does it serve the initial purpose on why PERKOM was set up in the first place? You might argue that it could strengthen our bonds if we were to participate. but I am sure PERKOM knows they can’t accomodate ALL communication students to help out. I personally do not anti PERKOM, in fact I always hope for the best from PERKOM; just like Mr. Aaron Rao and other students who left their comments here. So come on people! We should accept the fact that criticism is NOT meant to bring down the society, it is to help to build and strengthen it. We have to agree that after all, voicing out our opinion is way much better than being nonchalant (the tidak apa attitude)and ignore the society completely.

this entry has provoke a few of those ‘pro perkom’ or even perkom members…which i think is a good thing! first of all i would LOVE to point out that the red perkom t-shirt, is absofuckin-ridiculously horrendous. tu lah aku tak beli. kalau nak aku support, make it worthy lah fellow communications students yg menjawat post and happily sit your ass dalam PERKOM. i think i wrote about this perkom issue somewhere around march last year. oh yeah, here you go: http://tangyongkwang.blogs.friendster.com/hiatus_and_im_lazy/2007/03/siapa_makan_cil.html
i just think perkom 07/08 started off with the most undemocratic/uncivilised way. which in fact caused racial stir up & dissatisfaction among members. i pity those ppl, being elected for a very wrong reason and then struggling to prove themselve worthy. kaaaasihan deh.

    to G.FarAway

im not pro perkom as well.. but if we look back wut had perkom done recently.. IMO we should give them credit as well.. they had sacrified thier times, energies just to make PERKOM alive.. they oso like us.. students.. so.. who are us actually want to critisize them.. as long i knew.. mr. aaron rao never involved in any perkom’s activity.. so its not fair enuff for perkom’s members if a ‘lazy’ student like us want to say sumthing bad for them.. try to give them sum credits for them.. so they will more dedicative to perform well in the future…
